Benefit of Modern Meditation: Anxiety and Stress-Free Living

Manage your stress and anxiety to lead a happier life
Is living without any stress or anxiety at all possible? Probably not. Both anxiety and stress are part of the human experience. In fact, they are very useful, as in their natural state they are part of our inbuilt self-defence mechanism. We know that there is positive stress that forces us to act with purpose but also a negative stress, that is both debilitating and exhausting.
Despite the positive effect some stress can have, many of us crave none at all. Ironically though, to live your life powered by the expectation that you’ll have no stress could well end up causing greater anxiety. Sad, but that’s how the universe works.
But with regular modern meditation practice, you can begin to nurture insight, which allows you to know and to accept where you are and know that all experience, either felt as positive or negative, is just your nervous system responding to the world as it flows around you.
As the great English poet William Blake told us we were meant for both anxiety and stress but also for joy and happiness too.
“Joy and woe are woven fine,
A clothing for the soul divine,
Under every grief and pine,
Runs a joy with silken twine.
It is right it should be so,
We were made for joy and woe,
And when this we rightly know,
Through the world we safely go.”
– William Blake
But in the end, it’s all ok. It may not feel like it but underneath all that stress and anxiety is wellbeing, which manifests as happiness, creativity, health and purpose. As we often say it beanddo, that’s your natural default position. When people say they are beginning to feel better, to ‘feel like themselves again’, that’s exactly what is happening – their stress and anxiety is lifting and they are naturally returning to their default operating system.
Happiness is constant
We don’t need to try and be happy, because we already are. In other words your stress and anxiety are simply passing phenomena, whereas your happiness is constant. All you need to do is guide your attention towards the place where you keep it.
This is the change of perception our own modern meditation techniques reveal. We learn to look at things differently. And of course, as the saying goes, once we learn to look at things differently, the things we look at change. This new and different type of perception is central to the science of modern meditation and key to how it works. With practice, we naturally separate from the smothering nature of anxiety and stress.
Unfortunately, for many the pain suffered through anxiety and stress over time becomes embedded in the mind and body. Many people will suffer in silence. This might sound familiar if, over the years, you have developed a range of survival techniques and tactics that avoid out-and-out suffering but never really allow you to thrive – you are simply coping and that’s not really helping you to be the best you can be. We distract ourselves with work and more work, which then of course just adds to the self-created cycles of anxiety and stress.
“We’re so engaged in doing things to achieve purposes of outer value that we forget the inner value, the rapture that is associated with being alive, is what it’s all about.”
– Joseph Campbell
Managing your stress and anxiety
Rather than spending your time looking for a stress and anxiety-free life, decide instead that stress and anxiety can be managed, or that its impact can be engineered out of one’s day-to-day experience by changing how you relate to today’s experience.
At beanddo, we say that modern meditation is a ‘natural process of unlearning’. Don’t feel that this is a backward step; stress and anxiety are going to be mostly habits that can be broken or reshaped. So instead of being stressed, with practice we can acknowledge and ‘watch’ stress. Instead of being anxious, we can acknowledge and ‘watch’ anxiety. This is an empowering shift of one’s world. Learning to acknowledge and watch stress and anxiety as they develop creates a distance between you and what is happening. Our view changes and as Campbell said, we begin to notice the inner value and reconnect your being with your doing, which will manifest in a healthier and more liberated you!
