Be Happier in the Workplace

Happiness is largely a choice. You can choose to be happy at work and we firmly believe that employee happiness and wellbeing should be at the forefront of every manager’s mind. Research has found that happy employees outperform the competition by 20 percent. So it’s in an employer’s best interests to keep their workforce, empowered, inspired and smiling. But there are steps that you can take to be happier at work. Like most things worth having in life, to be happier, you have to work on it. You must set an intention to be happier; just like working out or eating healthily, learning to be happier at work takes practice. The good news is, there are some easy things you can do to be happier in the workplace – and even better, most of them don’t require big changes. 

Make the most of your mornings 

Getting out of bed on the wrong side can negatively impact your entire day, leaving you moody and irritable. So take some time in the morning to do a quick meditation, setting yourself up for a positive day at work. Make time to get some fresh air; go for a mindful walk before work and you will naturally get into your flow – a great place for boosting your happiness and wellbeing.

Support your colleagues 

Humans are people-pleasers, so it’s no surprise that helping your colleagues can make you happier at work. In fact, this study found that happier workers help their colleagues 33% more than those who aren’t happy. We’re not suggesting that you help them out by doing their work for them, or taking on extra responsibilities. Rather, pick them up a coffee on your way into work from time-to-time or tell them they did a great presentation. We are hardwired to support others, which also in turn builds our own sense of value and self esteem.

Make this type of behaviour an everyday thing, instead of something you do only once in a while, and you’ll soon begin to feel happier when at work.

Introduce modern meditation into the day job 

The workplace can be a stressful environment, with employees often encouraged to work harder and longer than ever before. Workplace pressure can lead to stress and anxiety, so introducing a modern meditation programme will help employees to deal with pressures. By taking some time during the working day to meditate, you can focus solely on the present. Research has shown that meditation can boost workplace productivity and can improve focus, so managers should be clambering to introduce a meditation programme into the workplace!

Avoid negativity

If you wish to be happier at work, you must avoid negative conversations as much as possible. Even if you’re a naturally positive person, eventually negative people will begin to wear you down and chip away at your happiness. Don’t let them bring you down.

Unplug

If the first thing you do in the morning is check your work emails, it’s time to stop. You need to take a break. Again, meditation can help you unplug and gain a greater awareness of your habits. The more aware you become, the more you actively switch off the auto-pilot. Breaking habits is tough, but it can be done and is totally worth it in the end. 

End your day with gratitude 

It’s often easier to remember the bad over the good, so begin to train your brain to remember the positive things. You can fight your natural negativity bias. An easy way to do this is to write down something you were grateful for each day. Studies have shown that when people do this regularly, they report feeling more optimistic about their lives overall. 

Many of us spend a huge amount of our lives in the workplace – shouldn’t that time be spent being happy and fulfilled? By implementing the ideas above, you can become happier and more productive in the workplace.
